oh catalina - I knew you were trouble when you drove in

Sunday October 18

We had a lovely evening and morning on the 14 and 15th with Scott, Cynthia and Aianne.  Amazing pizza, fabulous company.
Then we had a lovely evening, full day and half day at Uncle Rob and Auntie Irm’s on the 15-17th.  Mom was there visiting with them, so we got to see her, my friend Heather and her family were their for her sister’s wedding (her hometown), so we got to see them, we explored a little with all the fam., had Whitey’s ice cream twice, saw the locks work on the Mississippi and all in all had a rip-roaring good time.
We left mid-late afternoon on Saturday and drove until fairly late - about 9:00 or so.  Eric found a  attractive little spot wedged in between a semi-truck and some strange tractor thing at a Pilot gas station and we tucked in for the night.  In the morning we had our first real “RV breakfast” as Cade put it…. cooked fried and scrambled eggs, made toast, and all that good stuff.  It started out a fantastic day.
Then I tried to have our first day of school.  Someone, who shall remain anonymous, game me a lot of grief about a writing assignment that I was having her improve upon.  I took that time to make it abundantly clear that I was the teacher, and school was happening in order to learn and that type of behaviour was absolutely unacceptable.  They principal put his few cents in as well, after he pulled over the classroom.  Then things went much, much better and said pupil even started to enjoy the assignment.  It’s almost like I knew what I was talking about….

And then we were a few miles from Lapeer, Michigan (and yes, I know I shouldn’t start a sentence, never mind a paragraph with “and”.. but I’m not in school, nor am I a teacher right now!).  We broke down.  Again.  The RV just lost power and we coasted to a stop on the side of a busy freeway.  The 94 perhaps?  Thankfully we had our portable internet service (which doesn’t have a ton of data so we have to really limit usage) so we could google some numbers of tow services.  After three calls, we finally got someone who could tow us.  The big issue?  It is Sunday.  I’m all for a day of rest, and glad people do it, but it sure made life more inconvenient.
We were towed and parked outside the garage that will hopefully quickly fix us up tomorrow.
The whole family took a brisk jaunt down to the Home Depot for a bathroom break and to purchase some equipment to fix a little seating issue we are having with our banquet seating.  After that, Eric and Cade headed back to the RV and the girls and I went to Kohl’s and Meijer to do a little shopping.  Hey, why not….
Lucy, the girl with holes in her pockets (not because she wears them out but because the money burns holes) needed to buy herself a pair of pants (granted, they are super cute), Mia bought herself a romper and I found a pair of much needed replacement sunglasses for 90% off - $2.80.  Oh ya!
I was hoping to find fabric at Meijer to make make-shift window coverings for our little “sky-light” windows, but they didn’t have much there.  We did pick up a few groceries and such things, however.  Then we trouped off to the RV.  When we rounded the corner, we saw that Eric was sitting on the steps of the RV talking to someone.  I little closer and we saw that there was a police car beside the RV.  The po-po had a call about some hoodlums in an RV.  Thankfully Eric still carries his CHP retirement card, the two of them had a lovely little chat, and the officer wished us the best.  I did invite him for a fine family dinner of Kraft mac and cheese, hard boiled eggs and honey carrots but surprisingly he declined.
Later Eric told me why the police probably were called.  He was up on top of the RV trying to see if he could get over the razor wire fence into the lot of the mechanics shop that we were outside of, to see if he could plug us in for power!  Pretty sure that is why someone thought we were hooligans (Isn’t it odd that hoodlums and hooligans are both such fabulous descriptive words, to describe similar things and they both start with “hoo”?  It is odd, in case you didn’t catch that).  Shucks, I would have called the police on Eric had I known!
Well, the kids are all hunkered down for the night, Eric is off at a Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the baseball game and I’m about out of power on the laptop.  Praying for a better day tomorrow although really, it wasn’t that bad.  We’ll see what the damage is tomorrow!
